Limits
This was a great quote that I saw the other day and it is so applicable to every part of our life. What people fail to realize is how contageous those around them can be. Most people only relate this to medical conditions. I will be the first to tell you that if someone is hacking up a lung or looks like they have been throwing up all day, I will do my best to avoid them at all cost so I don't end up getting what they have. However, we will overlook the people around us who are constantly holding us back through their negative attitude and lazy work ethic. Show me any successful businessman and I can all but gurantee that he has surrounded himself with great people. These people will most likely have great attitudes and are able to look beyond today and tomorrow and see the big picture in whatever it is they are doing.
Ever since we opened Vitality, I have always looked at things through the microscope of here at the box. Jess and I talked about how we hoped we would be able to have members that were positive, encouraging, and humble. We couldn't have been more fortunate as to how things turned out as we have a box full of members that possess these qualities. The reason that we continue to grow is because the environment at Vitality is infectious. You cannot walk into a class and not feel the positive energy…..people are always excited about something, whether it is a PR or a goal they achieved outside of CrossFit, everyone gets excited at members' achievements.
I have always said since day one that what we do here at Vitality has so much carryover into our everyday lives outside of CrossFit. If people are willing to put in the sweat and work here at Vitality, how easily will that transfer over to work? If they don't quit when its 100 degrees with 100% humidity, how much easier will it be to stay 5 minutes late at work to finish a project instead of saving it for another day? If people are willing to work so hard to lose weight and improve their fitness, how much more willing are they going to be to provide their kids with a healthy meal and pass on taking the easy way out and stopping at McDonalds? Every question above can very easily go the other way. If you have never worked at trying to be fit or lose weight, why would you care if you stop in and pick up the family 10# of fried chix and 40oz sodas for everyone?
One thing not to forget in this whole equation is how impressionable kids are. They grow up liking the same things that their parents do and have similar tendencies. If we grow up not reaching our full potential, we are setting our kids up to do the same. Our kids need to see first hand that they are capable of doing anything they want and it is up to them to “make” their luck. In reality, every step starts with a positive attitude and from there anything goes.
Make it a point to stop putting limits on yourself and let that start here at Vitality. If you want to get stronger, get stronger. If you want to get faster, work at it and don't let anything or anyone stand in your way. Stop surrounding yourself with negative people, they are leeches and will suck the motivation out of you and in turn, make you a negative person. I have worked really hard at surrounding myself with positive people and I can't imagine this not being the case.
