What Now?
So now that the Open is over, many of us are looking for the next goal or the next carrot to chase. I think the Open did an outstanding job of identifying many weaknesses that we can all put a little more effort into. One of the best pieces of advice that I would give you is to pick ONE thing that you wish you would have done better at during the Open and spend the next few months working on that one piece of the puzzle. For some it will be double unders, for other it may be toes to bar or chest to bar pullups.
One of the biggest reasons people stop going to the gym and exercising is boredom….AND lazyness, but I will just talk about boredom today, lazyness is a whole new blog post that will be 10x as long:) This is where CrossFit has come to the rescue, because of the constant variance of workouts that are performed, it is much more difficult for your routine to get stale. However, you still need to make it a priority, especially as it starts to get a little warmer. Things will always get busier in the summertime and excuses will run rampant as to why you don't need to come suffer in the 100 degree heat at the gym. I will take care of a few excuses for you….NO, we do not and will not be getting air conditioning anytime in the next 30 years. YES, we will be running outside no matter how hot it is. This will be our 3rd summer here at Vitality and believe it or not, you will get used to the heat, so you can throw that excuse out before you even think about using that one. One thing that is always on our side with this time of year is the motivation to get back into your bathing suits….its amazing what the thought of that will make people do:) All of a sudden, they start taking this exercise idea VERY serious. However, the work you put in over the winter will determine how happy you are with the way your bathing suit fits. I don't care what your motivation is, just do your best to stay consistent with your routine.
We will have a new progression starting Monday and you will see that it will be a little different than the previous few months. Now that it is nice, we are going to shift from a strength emphasis and we will bias higher reps and conditioning for the next 8-12 weeks. Traditionally, we put a little more strength in during the colder months and focus more on building volume as the weather starts to get warmer.
We are also in the process of changing over our membership software and WOD tracking program and this will take place in the next month or so. Stay tuned for more information on this but we are super excited about the direction we will be heading. As with anything, this change will bring some headaches that will come with it but in the end, it will be substantially better than our current system. The log-in computer will be the FIRST thing to go and I will be taking it out back to do my version of “Office Space” on that thing. If only I could get the hours of my life back that I waste trying to make sure that thing stays logged on….anyway, that, I am proud to say, will no longer exist in the near future.
Alright, lots more info coming your way soon on some of these changes but this is it for now. GREAT job throughout the Open and thanks to everyone who came out and supported our athletes on Friday Nights, what an awesome 5 weeks we had! I am hoping for even a bigger turnout next year….already thinking of burpee penalties for those that would like to “buy” their way out of the Open. Talking with my lawyer to see if that is legal to “force” people into competing…..pretty sure it is, but you know me, always want to make sure I foster this open forum democracy here at Vitality:) Have a great rest of the week!
