We had a great turnout for Barbells for Boobs this week! Just over 70 of us took on “Grace” along with 14 of our kids who kicked off the event in the first heat with a scaled version of the workout. Thanks to Amber who got some great pictures! As I was going through them trying to find a couple to include in the post, I am now trying to narrow down from the 30 that I thought represented what the night was all about. I will have Jess put them all on facebook today so you guys can check them out.
Seeing these kids come in and be excited to exercise is so much bigger than what we think. We are setting them up to understand the potential that their bodies have. So many different lessons can be learned through fitness and these kids are getting a crash course long before the majority of their peers. They won’t realize how important experiences like this are until they get a bit older but I promise you nights like Wednesday will help shape them into the men and women that we all hope they grow up to be.
One of the pieces that I continually stress about CrossFit is the ability to quantify the results. This is always a great night because people come in with expectations, and in most cases, far exceed those expectations. For most, it has been nearly a year since completing “Grace”. Tonite gave you another opportunity to measure your progress. For most, it was an eye-opening few minutes as it showed how far you have come in the past 12 months. Whether it was doing it prescribed for the first time or beating your previous time by minutes, every time I turned around someone was talking about a PR.
To be able to come together to support a cause as amazing as Barbells for Boobs, and at the same time be able to do a workout as a community is pretty special. Everyday at Vitality, we get to be surrounded by other people who truly care about our progress not only in the gym, but in life. We got to see that firsthand as athletes were finishing the last few reps to the screams of support from their friends.
It’s so awesome to be a part of a community who really “get it”. You guys understand what this is all about. It is so much more than just working out. So much more than just being fit. It’s about surrounding ourselves with positive and motivated people who are great role models for our families. At the end of the day, that is really why we are trying to be so fit. We are trying to be stronger for our families so that we can be better at all the things OUTSIDE of the box. I feel really fortunate that my family gets to be surrounded by all of you guys, you may not be able to set up the rowers without screwing it up, but I am sure I couldn’t find a gym full of more quality people.
Oh and don’t forget, no matter what your time was….your kids don’t care and won’t remember. All they will remember is how strong their moms and dads are and how they want to be just like you when they grow up.
