1.Were you active prior to CrossFit?
Dan: I was active in High School with track and baseball. In recent years, prior to joining Vitality, my exercise routine usually amounted to running for the first three months of the year as a new year’s resolution then taking nine months off.
Kristy: I have been very active my entire life and played sports growing up, however, the year prior to joining CrossFit I was pregnant with twins and had a very bad pregnancy. The twins were born 4 months premature and spent a very long time in the NICU, so between my pregnancy and their NICU stay I did not workout at all.
2. When did you first start doing CrossFit?
Dan: I first started doing CrossFit at Vitality almost 4 years ago exactly. Foundations was a birthday gift from Kristy and probably one of the best gifts I’ve ever received.
Kristy: I can’t believe it has been 4 years!
3. What were your thoughts after your first workout?
Dan: I remember thinking there was no way I could go on back to back days since I was so sore. I would always need a day’s rest. I was insistent on going on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays only.
Kristy: I remember getting in the car with Dan after our first foundations class and saying “hurry and start the car so we can get home…I need to feed the babies!!” and he said “I am doing the best I can but I can’t move my arms and my legs are shaking!!” We laughed the entire way home and talked about how much we enjoyed the workout and I knew then it was going to be the stress relief and healthy outlet that we so desperately needed.
4. What do you enjoy the most about CrossFit?
Dan: There are many things I enjoy about Cross Fit. I enjoy the fact that I get to work out with almost the same group of people every time I am there. I have really enjoyed the personalized coaching from each of the coaches. At the 6 PM class, we get a variety of coaches so it’s nice to get different perspectives and learn different things. I also enjoy that fact that it gives Kristy and I something of substance to discuss rather than just talk about the normal topics of kid’s activities, school, work, etc. It is also fun when we get to work out together.
Kristy: I enjoy the fact that I am inspired by people in the gym every single day. There may be one day I am working out next to someone battling cancer or someone recovering from a stroke. The next day I am working out with someone who is pregnant and lifting more weight than I am! It is wonderful to spend time doing something I love with such great people.
5. What were your goals when you first started?
Dan: Survive!! But really it was to commit to the classes, get into the gym consistently and be able to do the WODs Modified.
Kristy: My goal when we first started was to just get to class three times a week. It was such an amazing stress relief for Dan and I since we had three kids under 2 years old and our home life was a combination of bottle feedings and dirty diapers! Getting to the gym was half of the battle and once I got there I always felt so much better and had more energy after the workouts.
What are they now? Dan: I have really tried to focus on pushing myself harder to get better results. My goal is to try and RX every WOD but sometimes the RX weights are set for more like people that are 250 pounds of muscle. I’d like to do some form of a Muscle Up one day. It’s really the only movement that is still very foreign to me.
Kristy: My goals now are to try and complete three workouts a week Rx. I also am really trying to improve on the body weight movements and would one day love to be able to complete Murph Rx with the weighted vest 🙂
6. What is your favorite CrossFit movement?
Dan: Any type of Clean movement and Shoulder to Overhead
Kristy: My three favorite CrossFit movements are cleans, running and rowing. I love how CrossFit makes me run faster because I am trying to keep up with the people in front of me 🙂
7. What is your least favorite movement?
Dan: Probably the only person in the gym (besides my wife) who doesn’t like Deadlifts.
Kristy: 6 months ago I would have easily said burpees..I think all of the ladies in the 9:30am class know that I used to hate burpees more than anything 🙂 After Jess P. helped me change my burpee form and we did the 100 day burpee challenge I actually don’t despise them anymore! My least favorite movements are deadlifts, toes to bar and overhead squats.
8. What kind of nutrition plan do you follow and has that changed since you started CrossFit?
Dan: When we joined, I followed no nutrition plan. After about a year, we joined the paleo challenge, saw results and did it the next couple years. I’ve eliminated almost all sweets from my diet and most heavy dairy and sugar is gone too. I’ve switched from trying to be strict Paleo to working one on one with Jess and her customized Nutrition Planning in order to try and gain more lean muscle mass.
Kristy: I am 85% -90% strict Paleo if you exclude the wine..although technically isn’t organic red wine paleo???!! I am most thankful for the nutrition information that I have learned from Jess. Through the Paleo challenges and Jess’s expertise I feel as though our entire family has benefited greatly. We cook in bulk and there is always a healthy meal or snack readily available. The kids are learning at a young age what it means to eat healthy and how important it is and I could not be more thankful!
9. Talk about your results from doing CrossFit?
Dan: I think I look different and I know I feel different from a strength perspective. I also have more endurance with running, etc then I used to have. It’s also been a major source for stress relief. It’s amazing to see the progress I’ve made over the last few years, I just hope to keep improving.
Kristy: I still have a LONG way to go, but I would say because of CrossFit I am much stronger than I have ever been in my life. We have also made lifelong friends through CrossFit and for that I am most grateful 🙂
