One of the biggest limiters that athletes face is overhead strength and stability. Without these two pieces, development of strength overhead is slowed in a number of different movements. Over the course of the next 8-weeks, we are going to focus on developing this type of strength through focusing on a variety of foundational strength protocols.
We will have (2) days/week (Monday/Friday) that we will program this work into our group classes. Obviously, the goal is to complete as many training days as possible for the greatest adaptation to take place, but it won’t be the end of the world if you miss a few sessions throughout the cycle. As I have said for years, the focus of our work needs to be on the strength/skill portion first and then on the Conditioning work. There is an epidemic in the CrossFit world of athletes opting to “sandbag” the strength work in order to save themselves for the Metcon. I challenge you to reverse this thinking and see what type of gains you get over the next 8-weeks. Everything in life gets easier when you’re STRONGER.
In addition to the importance of stability, this is also a time that you can dedicate to improving your overhead mobility. We all could benefit from an increased range of motion in our overhead position. We will help you in identifying the pieces that are most important to your development and help you hammer at these weaknesses over the next few months. The biggest thing to keep in mind is that there is no shortcut or quick fix for building strength. The goal of this cycle is to expose you to some different exercises that you could add into your weekly battle rhythm to continue developing into a well-rounded athlete.
Testing week starts today, look forward to seeing you in the box!
